Bleh, you know, people always ask me how I can stand living in Canada where its so cold most of the time, frankly, I don't understand how people can live in the semi tropics.
As of April 1st, the temperature soared to 25/80 and hasn't really gotten lower than that. that's not TOO hot yet, but its only 1 week into spring, man! Also, the humidity, gad though, its horrific, its like a wet, hot blanket wrapped around you when you go out. AND, the bugs...mind boggling. I had my first asthma attack (minor one, but still) in like 3 years yesterday and it was a bugs fault! I was walking towards the kitchen and saw movement in the bedroom (which is like 12 feet away), so I wander over and there is the biggest goddamn bug I have ever seen. I found out later that it was a 'water bug', apparently around here you can hardly help but have those occasionally. Paul says its a miracle that we don't have bugs on a regular basis, cause down here everyone does. Anyway, so I run back to the kitchen to grab a can of Raid. I start spraying and it starts running, I start screaming, thus Smeagol starts barking. This thing was the size of the spoon part of a teaspoon and it could run like the wind. I Raided it halfway across the bedroom, into the bathroom and behind the toilet. It got trapped there and so I continued to spray. I don't think I killed it with Raid, btw, I think I drowned it in a pool of the stuff. I then pretty much plunked on the ground and wheezed for about 15 minutes while Smeagol licked at me and was generally concerned.
Okay, so the bugs are bad. Paul has told me not to even go out after dark cause i'll die if I see what lives on our stairs and front cement area. *vomit* ALSO, the pollen count today is the highest it has EVER BEEN SINCE THEY STARTED MONITORING IT! It is 5861 ( I think thats pollen spores per cubic metre, but not sure), which is past the very high level, and on to, I kid you not, 'miserable'. That's what the pollen rating was...'miserable'.
Anywho, things are going fine, just incredibly busy and I'm hating the weather, but that's life. My mom and dad in law were here earlier this week and we had a great time and they were generally wonderful to us. I have been SO crazy busy though, I'll write more when I have more time and energy :)

You can call it a waterbug if you want, but it's still a fricking cockroach. And no, you can't do a damn thing about it.
Oh, you've seen nothing yet hon. The humidity will get worse and the temps will reach 100. I kid you not.
Invest in mosquito repellent. And deodorant/perfume. hahahahaha. Welcome to the South, darlin'!
I'm not so sure it's a fricking cockroach 'cuz don't they go to places that aren't clean? And after visiting, I must say that Paul and Jenn (and I'm sure it's more Jenn doing the work!) are clean people. Having not seen it, though, I would be more inclined from the description to believe it's a GD waterbug, which we had in the basement when we lived in Chicago. They'll come up around the pipes where it's nice and damp. I can still remember Paul's grandma walking into the "boiler room" portion of the basement with a broom and the announcement of "Shakoo, shakoo" like the damn bugs could understand that she was telling them to get in their crawly places or get whacked with the broom! Now Hawaii, that's another story -- you'll get roaches down there the size of your middle finger (length, not breadth), and if you wap at 'em with a towel, they grab ahold and go along for the ride! Mom2 Great visiting with you guys!
I should have mentioned in my post, but it is a TYPE of cockroach, but not the small kind that you see in dirty, unsanitary places with infestation and such. I would never have insinuated that Jen and Paul's place was dirty. I hope you didn't take it that way, Jen.
But still a cockroach, sorry, and yes, I've had the same issues and while my house is not spotless it's not unsanitary, either. Hope I didn't offend.
No no, dear, I totally understood. I have to say that we are like you, our place isn't totally spotless, but it is certainly not unsanitary or anything. I haven't seen another one yet, so hopefully... We're maybe going out tonight so I'll try to stop and get those roach trap deals just in case!
