I am obsessively checking my airline reservations because the last couple of times that I have flown, I have found that if I look often enough all of a sudden there will be a better seat for me to snatch up. My goal, seat-wise, is generally to sit as close to the front as possible, and at the window. I also prefer, naturally, to sit in a two seat side rather than three seat side. I just managed to snag a row 14 on one of the flights ( I was in row 18 up til now), so now I am in 14 on both flights, although unfortunately one of them is on a three person side.
I have gathered a lot of information about myself in the last few busy travel years as to what my travel rules are. Besides seat assignments, I absolutely refuse to go to the bathroom on the plane if the flight is under three hours. I go when they announce that boarding is beginning. I always wear my 'Canadian Girls Rock' hat because it hides messy hair, it can cover my eyes if I want to nap and it gets me treated well since everyone loves Canadians. I always bring a light jacket because although I get super boiling hot when the plane is taking off, once we are at cruising altitude I am always freezing. Plus, I get paranoid about my purse when I'm sleeping, so I can put the purse on my lap and cover it with the jacket.
I have also learned not to bring too much carry on crap, although I always wind up bringing way too much and then shlepping a 40 pound bag through the airport with an already bruised shoulder. This time, I am absolutely determined to bring only the bare necessities. I always worry that my bags will get lost and then if I don't have my medications or makeup or what have you on my person, I will be screwed. But, that has never happened and I'm not going to do it this time. I'm also going to try to bring no liquids with me on board as I already have enough trouble getting through security for some reason and I don't want to tempt fate. I'm not even going to bring contact lens solution. My lenses are already past their one month wear date so if I have to take them out, I'm just gonna chuck em.
I'm busily getting tons of stuff done in preparation for leaving. It's all miserably hard to convince myself to do because each thing I do makes it more real that I'm going...but it has to be done. Paul is being extra extra nice, so that helps :)
By the way, reason number 366 why I love Paul. Today he came into the house after work saying 'help help'. There was a lady bug in a spiderweb right outside our door and despite his horrendous fear of spiders he used his cell phone antenna to rescue her and put her on the ledge. Unfortunately, she now had a big chunk of web attached to her and it impeded her ability to walk. I speared the web with my thumb nail and gently moved her along. After two more times of doing that all the web came off and she flew away with a little thank you wave of her feelers. Okay, I may have imagined that part. In bed as we were falling asleep, Paul said 'we rescued a lady bug today!'. We were proud.

Awww, I totally would have tried to help that ladybug, too. Awesome.
I hope travel goes well for you. I haven't flown that often, but I am one of those people that pack way too much stuff. For our three day vacation last month, I think I had enough clothes for a week.
I know you're leery of going, but think of what it means once your trip is done. You'll be able to find a job, and you'll be able to get married!!!!!! I hope you are able to enjoy yourself and not worry about too much stuff when you're gone.
Everyone loves ladybugs because they are pretty, but it's important to remember that they force aphids to slave in the nectar mines to produce delicious bum-dew for them to drink.
In my house, ladybugs are cat toys :p The cat doesn't eat them, just follows them around and chitters at them. Quite cute.
See you soon!
