Dum

Stupid eBay is too confusing for my teeny tiny mind. Seriously. So, I set up my seller's account and posted my first item. I read the tutorials and followed all of their suggestions and instructions and listed my item. Two days later I got an email saying that I had 'violated' a trademark and as such my listing was being pulled. Our item was a sports jersey and the tutorials said that it was important to list the maker of the jersey so I did. But the maker of the jersey didn't like that and said that we couldn't relist unless we had a receipt proving that we purchased it from them. Um, no. The item was used and fairly old, who keeps receipts for these things. So, no dice on that.

Now today I wanted to place my first bid ever on an item (I know, I'm living in the past) and stupid me, I thought that if it said 'minimum bid $6.95' then that was the minimum bid! Haha! I bid $6.95 and was told that someone had already placed a higher bid and that went on until I had bid over $13 and still had been outbid by the original, and only, bidder. So, I obviously didn't understand the concept.

*sigh* I hate being too dumb for websites that 10 million other people understand. This may run in my family though because one of my family members, who shall remain nameless, doesn't understand Rock Paper Scissors, so...(I love you unnamed family member!)

Anyway, Paul in his graciousness has made a pile of other things that he wants me to try and sell so wish me luck.

It seems like you were thinking maximum bid?

Well,no, I just thought that if the minimum bid was $6.95 and someone had already bid, say, $15 then the minimum bid should change to, say, $15.01 or whatever, you know? I didn't realize that the amount bid remained hidden so that you have to guess what would be the best amount. I thought it was more like an auction where you can SEE the bidding progress.

On Ebay, you can put in what your maximum bid would be for an item, and the site will automatically rebid for you if someone else bids. That way, if you see a min bid for 6.95, you can put in 20 dollars, yet, if no one else bids on the product, you only pay 6.95. But, if someone comes in and bids that (sees that there is already a bid for that and then bids again, say 8, it'll make your bid 8.50 (or whatever the bid incriments are) and if that buyer wants it, he'll bid again. Proxy bidding it is called. It'll keep going until they give up, or outbid you. You can then go in and put in another maximum bid.

I have no idea about selling stuff on there, as I've never done it. Seems wierd though, that you'd get a copyright infringement warning. :(

Hope I helped a bit and didn't just ramble.

Another option for selling stuff (such as your trademarked jersey) is craigslist. And then you're dealing with someone local and get cold hard cash. Well, at least that's how I've used craigslist - I would never sell anything on there to someone who wasn't going to pick it up or meet somewhere, and I sure wouldn't take a check.

Ah, Kim, that did help. I understand a bit better now. :)

I shouldn't have even written this post though cause I feel like an idiot for not understanding something so basic! Thanks, m'dear :)

And, ooh, good idea, I'll try craigslist too.

Blah, everyone screws up something at some point, so I wouldn't worry much. And could you perhaps, email me? I goobered my email addresses, and lost yours. I have a bunch of contacts named Jen, and one of them mailed a new address, and I changed the wrong JEN! Now I can't find yours! Stupid of me. Sorry.

Ebay's transformation over the years boggles me a bit too. Back when I lived in Madison (about 7 years now), I used to post to ebay every weekend. It was a very simple process.

Then last year before I moved to NZ, I started selling stuff on there again. The process had become about 10x more complicated. Luckily, I had the background knowledge of years before, but I was still surprised at all the new policies. So basically, don't feel bad.

Though the part about your bidding is funny. *grin*
