All right then, we are in our new apartment! I've got all the boxes and bags unpacked and the kitchen, spare room, computer room/office are pretty much organized. Once Paul has hooked up the washer/dryer and put together the bed frame I'll work on the laundry room and bedroom. Oh, and I have no idea what to do with the bathroom and linen closet as I now have room to arrange stuff nicely instead of cram it in wherever it fits. Then hang pictures and dust/vacuum and done! Oh, and address changes...
Anyway. The kitchen here is a wonder! In the old kitchen I had to shove a million things in each cupboard and still had to have half of our dishes and appliances on the already limited counter space. Here we have lovely cupboards - one after the other after the other. Even the dog food/treats/PP pads etc all fit into one big cupbard! And I HATE having stuff on the counters...I want my countertop to be a vast acreage of space waiting for me to bake and cook on it. And now I can!
Really, most everywhere we have too much space and not enough furniture. And our shabby furniture looks even shabbier on these nice, clean carpets. The bedroom could stand to be a bit bigger, but other than that the space is great for us. We are exhausted beyond words and can barely stand up in the mornings but now that we are all moved and unpacked we can move at a slower pace and cross our fingers that our illnesses will magically go away in the mold free space.
Oh, quick negative - BUGS! There are pillbugs in half the corners (dead) and we've killed two 2-inch water bugs already. The place is quite clean but I guess we may continue to have this problem as one of our walls is up against, well, dirt. The front of the building is 3 stories high and the back, where we are, is 2 as it is built into a hill. So, we have neighbors above us and to one side of us, but then woods on two sides and underground essentially on the other. Does that make sense? So the bugs are nasty ass, but we can get an exterminator as much as once a week if need be (free). Thus far we have not had an exterminator come in because me, Wiffy and Smee all have some respiratory issues, but the bugs may turn out to be a problem here. Anyone have opinions on whether or not an exterminators chemicals may be a problem for us?
Bout it for now. Its hard to write interesting blog posts when your life is so consumed with the uninteresting but crucial details of moving, getting well etc. But I should be able to be -slightly- more fascinating again soon! In theory!

I wouldn't want to live in a space that had pesticides all over. Especially if it was something that had to be done regularly. You live in Georgia. Roaches are part of life there. Get some cups and some canned food, and when you find a roach, put a cup over it. Put the can on top to keep the bug from escaping, and when Paul comes home he can squish them. Or get a duck.
Well, I know that its a part of life here and I am an expert bug squisher, I don't have to wait for Paul to kill them...although I do squeal as I do it. They do seem to be significantly worse here than in the other apartment though.
I guess I was wondering if we could have the exterminator in once and that would help for weeks or months on end (then, worth it) or if it would only help for a few days or a week (then, not worth it at all and I can keep smushing em).
I remember out in California people would have to have a tent put over their house and then the whole house would be sprayed with bug stuff - I'm not sure what kind of bugs they were exterminating, though. Not sure if that helps in regard to how toxic the chemicals are or not. :)
Of course, California is probably a lot more paranoid about health risks than, well, pretty much any other state.
Not even sure extermination does anything for those kinds of roaches....they aren't a sign of dirt or filth like the little roaches, they just come in out of the elements. Having that much woods/dirt around you are going to have some, regardless. I wouldn't risk your lungs and the dogs even tho most of the stuff is pet/human safe. Good luck in the new spot and enjoy all your space!
The tent thing is for termites. They're awful.
And as someone who lived with cockroaches in NYC (gross gross gross), I recommend getting the roach motel + roach sterilizer.
Or if you're really brave, fog the house, effective, but gross.
I still think a duck would be the best idea. But, no one ever listens to me. sniffle
Ohhh...I wouldn't want to live with chemicals in the house due to bug spray stuff...is there anything on line with natural stuff for the bugs? I know cinnamon stops ants and my mother had skunks digging like crazy under her house and she put up bricks and dirt all sorts of stuff to deter them...she tried chili powder...and that stopped them in their tracks and they haven't been back!
Well, sadly, we have an exterminator scheduled for tomorrow. I agree with all of you that I don't want the chemicals but as it turns out, our place has been previously unoccupied for 6 months and the bug situation is out of control. We figure that we will have the bug guy in once to get rid of any residual problems and hopefully that will take care of everything. If not, then we can start on trying the more natural remedies etc.
