The week before the wedding we went out to get haircuts and acquire various things at the mall. At the salon the woman who was cutting Paul's hair commented twice on how much she loved my purse (Walmart $9!). Then, at the mall we were buying a gift for one of my favorite little girls and the clerk told me how much she loved my blouse. And after that we were in a department store and the woman helping us told me that she thought my glasses were great.
So, I was feeling pretty good about myself (despite the fact that the man at the mall who sized my ring down said 'huh, who would have thought that you would wear such a small ring size') until we were driving home and Paul said 'chubby girls like to compliment each other, don't they'. I was momentarily baffled until he pointed out that all three women who had complimented me that day were plus-sized. Juicy, if you will.
I realized then that that was totally true. Paul asked why that would be and I said that I thought it was because we know how cruel the world can be to women who aren't size 0 so we make sure that other women like us are aware that they are beautiful just the way they are. I decided at that moment to redouble my efforts to be complimentary to the people I meet every day. If I can make someone else's day a little brighter, that's great. And it will probably make my days brighter too.

What a sweet thought :) If only more people thought that way (and acted on it!)
Pay it forward, Juicy girl!
I think it's partly cultural in America too, since people of the same sex are often too afraid to give sincere compliments to each other. They may say, "Oh, your dress is cuuuute," but they would not say, "You look SO beautiful in that dress!" Shame. I could go on, but I'm trying to keep my comments on blogs now down to one page.
Actually, J. that's a really interesting point. I never thought of it that way (that we can compliment the outfit but not the person in the outit). I'll have to make sure that I keep that in mind too.
