Pretty nice weekend here in the Pop & Soda household. We watched a bunch of movies and episodes of Corner Gas (which is a fantastic Canadian show that my sister Shari gave us the first three seasons of for a wedding present). On Saturday I had my first DMV experience (although they call it the DDS now). I was pretty worried since every American sitcom ever made has done an episode about the horror of the DMV, but it was fine. We were there to get Paul's licence renewed and it was all pretty quick and the people were, if not friendly, certainly not hostile. I really think that Canada does a whole lot of things right, but America definitely has Canada beat in the driver's licence department. In 20 minutes Paul had his picture taken, did an eye test and got a neat little wallet sized card that cost $35 for TEN years. My Canadian licence costs over $50 for one year and is a two part thing that looks stupid and unprofessional. Hate that. Anyway, I guess America has to be better than my home and native land in at least one or two ways.
Then, on Sunday we celebrated Paul's 30th birthday! We relaxed for much of the day and then went to see The Reaping. The movie was SO good, very creepy and dramatic and just my cup of tea. Paul's parents sent him a card and check and my parents had me order a game of Scrabble for him (so we played Scrabble twice yesterday too). He also is getting a gift from me but even though I paid for two day shipping, it is not here yet. GRRRR! AND, he bought himself a special gift too. So, I think he had a pretty good birthday, I hope so cause, well, I love him and also 30 is pretty special.

Yesterday was my Mama's birthday, too! Tell Paul Happy Birthday from me! Sounds like you guys are having a great time. Very happy to hear that.
We pay $50/year because it includes insurance. I'm pretty sure Americans buy their insurance separately? Anyway, that's why it's cheaper when you have merits.
Oh, and happy 30th birthday to Paul :P I can't believe I'm older than anybody.
Well, yes, I technically forgot that the money includes insurance. Duh. Yes, we have to buy a licence and tags (licence plates) and insurance, although the insurance is the only thing that costs more than a token amount. So my cost point is moot.
But I still maintain that having 5 or 10 year licences makes much more sense and even if you disagree with that I still HATEHATE our lame Manitoba two part licences.
I remember when I renewed my license in Arizona a few years ago, I looked at the expiration date and it was my 65th birthday!! That seemed a bit excessive to me. The Montana one seems to be for eight, which is long enough for me to lose it, of course.
And that INCLUDES insurance??? That is NICE! Insurance prices here vary wildly from person to person, car to car, and state to state. We have to get it for 2 cars next month and I've been real nervous about it.
